Common filter settings

28. May 2026

Elaine Foley

Only two things must be checked to create a filter, highlighted in red. Other settings could be useful, but they can be left as is or empty.

Field Leave as is!
You can change this to another field if you have changed your mind and wish to add a different field to the Filters.
Edits here could be accessing specific field information, e.g., field.en / field.lat. See fields for details.
Enable filter Select this checkbox if you would like this field displayed as a filter in the sidebar of the Channel.
Enable search suggestions Select or deselect this checkbox to enable Fotoware Alto to display search suggestions for users searching in this channel and/or for search suggestions in the filter.
Enable search in filter Enable or disable the search for each field in the sidebar for the filter. Note this is also dependent on the values to display; the search will only appear in conjunction with the show more option.
Search fields

Here, you can set the field to use for the search.  For Channel or List Items, these field values are used for suggestions. Fotoware Alto will only show suggestions for Filters which have Search Fields.  For a tagbox filter based on tagbox._refid you want to add a text field, e.g., tagbox name, so users can search for tags instead of IDs.

Add if you want the values to appear as search suggestions in the Content Browser and List Item Browser.

Add a field from the Tagbox list if you have a Tagbox Filter based on the refId.

Without configuration, the field of the filter will be used, and the Filters will not be considered for suggestions.

Exclude values

You can leave this empty.
Here, you can exclude a value that you do not wish to appear in the current filter or suggestion. Regex is supported here; otherwise, strings must match values from the filter field. When all filters are set, the ones defined will be excluded. When you define a term, e.g., "Apple", Fotoware Alto will look for an exact match in the filter field values, so "apple" or "app*" will not work.

Example: Show all file types, exclude: Audio
Example: Show all usages, exclude: Internal

  • If your filter field is set to a refId or ID, you have to exclude the IDs here.  The terms will not work.
  • If you are excluding yes or no in a checkbox field, please use false and true here. Other syntax, such as False, will cause an error in the channel and configuration.

Include values

You can leave this empty.
Here, you can include values that you do wish to appear in the current filter or suggestion. Regex is supported here; otherwise, strings must match values from the filter field. When all filters are set, they will all show up; no others. When you define a term, e.g., "Apple", Fotoware Alto will look for an exact match in the filter field values, so "apple" or "app*" will not work.

If you use a wildcard here, you can only have one value, not multiple values. For example, you have a Filter on a text field linked to brand names, and you add a wildcard value like "Picture*". Then you cannot add additional values.

If your filter field is set to a refId or ID, you have to include the IDs here. The terms will not work.

Values to display

You can leave as is. The default is 10.

This determines how many values are displayed in the Content Browser filters by default before the Show More option is displayed.

Sort

Select how to order the filter items of the filter:

  • Item count descending
  • Alphabetically ascending*
  • Alphabetically descending*

Sorting is only available for filters terms and terms relation.

Sort field *alphabetically only Select the field values that should be used, e.g., the name or the synonym.
